Indian stock markets opened sharply lower on Wednesday as renewed war tensions in the Middle East weighed on investor sentiment.

The BSE Sensex fell 1,705 points to trade around 74,998, while the NSE Nifty dropped 503 points to about 23,274 in early deals.

Markets had posted gains over the previous three sessions, but the trend reversed as geopolitical concerns intensified.

Experts attributed the sell-off to a sharp rise in crude oil prices following attacks on key energy infrastructure in the Middle East, which added to risk aversion across equities.
