TIRUCHIRAPPALLI: Manachanallur DMK MLA Kathiravan has come under scrutiny after gifting luxury cars to local party functionaries in Tiruchirappalli district, according to a complaint filed with the district election authorities.

The MLA reportedly presented cars worth about Rs 15 lakh each to five DMK union secretaries and two town panchayat secretaries who had worked for his victory in the 2021 Assembly election. The gifts were also shared on social media.

The complaint alleges that the cars were distributed after the Assembly election date was announced, and therefore amount to a violation of election rules. The petition was submitted to Tiruchirappalli Collector and District Election Officer Saravanan by AIADMK Tiruchirappalli North district IT wing secretary Nagarajan.

Nagarajan said that if Kathiravan is again named as the DMK candidate, the expenditure on the cars should be added to his election accounts and could create issues in accepting his nomination. He also said a complaint would be sent to the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer and the Election Commission in New Delhi.
