Conflict continues into day 22

Fighting in West Asia has continued for the 22nd day, with Iran rejecting calls for a ceasefire. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would continue to defend itself until the war ends in a permanent and comprehensive manner.

Background to the escalation

According to the report, the United States and Israel began military operations against Iran on February 28, citing concerns over a nuclear threat. In response, Iran has carried out strikes targeting gas facilities in Israel and neighbouring countries, as well as US military bases in the region.

Trump signals winding down, but no ceasefire

US President Donald Trump indicated that operations in the Middle East could be brought to an end as objectives were nearing completion. He said there was “no room” for talk of a ceasefire, while leaving open the possibility of negotiations.

Iran demands guarantees and compensation

Araghchi said Iran would not accept a ceasefire and warned against a repeat of last year’s situation. He added that any settlement must include assurances that such a conflict will not recur, along with compensation for damages suffered by Iran, while stating that Tehran is ready to hear and consider proposals that could fully end the war.
