Two readers from Tiruppur district’s Udumalai taluk have alleged that they were forced to pay bribes to complete document registration at the Gomangalam sub-registrar office. The complaints were shared as part of a weekly reader-feedback series highlighting alleged corruption.
In the first account, a resident of Anikkadavu–Ramachandrapuram village said he approached the office in 2025 to execute a sale deed for his land. He alleged that a woman sub-registrar refused to proceed citing “various reasons” and demanded Rs 4 lakh as a bribe.
The reader said he was compelled to complete the sale and, through a document writer, negotiated the amount down to Rs 3 lakh, which he claims was paid to get the deed registered. He further alleged that when he asked for a reduction, the official’s side justified the demand by claiming large sums had been paid for the posting and that a “top-up” would be needed for an extension.
In a second complaint, a resident of Kodingiyam village said that in 2018, while registering a release deed in his father’s name, the then sub-registrar insisted on a copy of an old 1971 handwritten parent document, saying it was difficult to read. The reader alleged that the work was completed only after paying Rs 10,000—reduced from an initial demand of Rs 45,000—raising questions about the stated reason for delay.
