Washington: US President Donald Trump said he has directed the Defence Department to postpone all planned military strikes on Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure for five days.
The announcement comes as attacks involving US and Israeli forces against Iran continue, keeping tensions high across the Middle East. Crude oil prices have also been rising, and Trump had earlier set a deadline for the Strait of Hormuz to be fully opened within two days.
In a statement, Trump said constructive discussions over the past two days have focused on finding a complete and permanent solution to the ongoing conflict in the region. He added that broader talks are expected to continue throughout the week.
Trump said the decision on whether the pause leads to a longer halt will depend on the outcomes of the current meetings and discussions.
