Washington: As the United States prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of its Independence Day, the White House is planning large-scale celebrations for July 4.
To coordinate the event, a special committee has been formed. Officials said the commemorations are intended to highlight the country’s progress over 250 years, its democratic values and goals for the future.
The US Commission of Fine Arts has approved the release of special commemorative coins and postage stamps to mark the milestone. Once final specifications are set, the coin will be minted.
According to Treasury official Brandon Beach, the commemorative coin will be made of 24-carat gold and will feature an image of President Donald Trump on one side, depicted leaning forward at a table with his hands clasped.
US law generally bars the image of a sitting president from appearing on US currency and special coins. Officials noted this is a commemorative issue distinct from circulating money, and the Treasury Secretary holds final authority over design and minting approvals. The plan has faced objections, including from Democratic Party members and other groups.
