A case connected to the Veerappan hunt—described as one of the incidents that shook the country—was heard in the Supreme Court after years of proceedings in lower courts. Several people were named in the matter, and key accused were already in prison, while a well-known actor was also among those implicated.
According to the account, the trial in the lower court ran for about 12 years and generated an enormous record: over 7,000 pages of documents, statements from 686 witnesses, and more than 13,000 pages of oral depositions. The lower court’s judgment itself was said to run to around 4,000 pages.
The narrative also highlights the workload of judges, noting that even during court vacations, judges continue working—often using that time to read case files and write judgments. A judge familiar with the case is quoted as stressing that holidays are not “time off” but periods spent drafting decisions.
The report claims that, based on the material on record, the actor’s conviction was seen as likely even before the verdict. When the judgment was delivered, the outcome included a death sentence for one person and life imprisonment for 10 others.
