A Colombian military aircraft crashed shortly after taking off in the country’s southern Amazon region near the border with Peru, authorities said.

The aircraft was identified as a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules. Officials said 110 soldiers were on board at the time of the accident.

Colombia’s Defence Minister confirmed the crash but said the number of deaths, if any, has not yet been officially verified. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the site after receiving information about the incident.

President Gustavo Petro expressed concern over the crash and said he hopes there will be no loss of life. The C-130 Hercules has been in service with the Colombian military since the 1960s.

The report also noted that a C-130 crash in neighbouring Bolivia a few days earlier killed 20 people.
