Kamal Haasan’s decision to keep Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) out of the upcoming election has triggered sharp political debate, coming after multiple rounds of discussions with the DMK-led side.

According to the report, the DMK had pressed MNM to contest under the DMK’s “Rising Sun” symbol, with the understanding that Kamal would be accommodated with a Rajya Sabha seat. Kamal, sensing the pressure, chose to step away from the electoral contest altogether.

Supporters of the move argue that contesting under the DMK symbol would have brought little independent recognition to MNM, with any votes effectively adding to the DMK’s tally. By opting out, they say, Kamal prevented MNM from being reduced to a mere appendage in the alliance.

Critics, however, warn that a party that does not contest elections risks fading from the political field, citing past examples of smaller parties losing relevance after similar choices. The report also notes that Kamal’s decision leaves the DMK with two additional constituencies that had been considered for MNM.

Within MNM, some functionaries who took part in the negotiations have questioned why detailed discussions and data-sharing were pursued if the final outcome was to skip the election. While the Chief Minister has described the decision as a “sacrifice,” online reactions remain divided on whether it is sacrifice or strategy.
