A special analysis has compiled DMK’s performance in Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from 1957 up to the current 2026 election cycle, listing the number of constituencies the party contested and the seats it won.
The data shows DMK’s early growth from 15 wins out of 117 seats contested in 1957 to 50 out of 143 in 1962, followed by major breakthroughs in 1967 (137 out of 174) and 1971 (184 out of 203).
In later years, the party saw sharp fluctuations, including 48 wins out of 230 in 1977, 24 out of 176 in 1984, and a low of 2 out of 176 in 1991. It then recorded a strong showing in 1996 with 173 wins out of 176 seats contested.
More recent results include 31 wins out of 167 in 2001, 96 out of 128 in 2006, 23 out of 119 in 2011, 88 out of 176 in 2016, and 133 out of 173 in 2021.
The 2026 Assembly election is scheduled for April 23, with results to be announced on May 4. The analysis notes that DMK contested 175 seats in 2026, while the number of seats won will be known after counting.
