A professor at Anna University in Chennai has been arrested after a student filed a sexual harassment complaint with the city police, officials said.
According to the complaint submitted at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office on March 26 evening, the student alleged that the professor harassed her in person and sent obscene messages on her mobile phone. She also claimed she was threatened with consequences if she spoke about it.
The student further stated that some of her friends were also allegedly subjected to harassment, and that she had already raised the issue with an Anna University committee. She sought a police inquiry and appropriate action.
Following instructions from Police Commissioner Arun, the Abhiramapuram All Women Police Station began an investigation. Police later arrested Professor Gnanavel Babu and remanded him to judicial custody.
Meanwhile, students staged a protest on the university campus demanding action. The university administration has issued an order suspending the professor based on the student’s complaint.
