Coimbatore district, which has 10 Assembly constituencies, is drawing heightened political attention ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election. The contest is being widely viewed as a direct battle of influence between AIADMK candidate and former minister S.P. Velumani and DMK district in-charge Senthil Balaji.
In the 2021 Assembly election, the AIADMK alliance won all 10 constituencies in Coimbatore, even as the DMK formed the government in the State. The outcome was seen as a setback for the DMK in a district considered crucial for the next round of elections.
Following that result, the DMK leadership appointed Senthil Balaji as the party’s district in-charge. In the subsequent local body elections, the DMK secured victories in a majority of positions across Coimbatore district, strengthening its organisational footing.
Party circles expect the rivalry to intensify in the coming days as both sides attempt to retain and expand their influence. The report notes that the DMK has distributed stainless-steel pots across the district, while AIADMK supporters argue that such outreach will not translate into Assembly election gains.
The report also highlights past margins across constituencies, showing close contests in several seats in 2021, including Coimbatore South, Mettupalayam, Kinathukadavu and Pollachi—adding to expectations of a tight fight in the district.
