Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Selva Perunthagai on Thursday said the Congress plans to contest again in most of the Assembly constituencies it won in the 2021 election.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said the party has secured 16 of the 18 seats it had won earlier, with Tenkasi and Vriddhachalam being the exceptions. He added that two seats could not be retained due to requests from alliance partners, and the party has accepted the reasons given.

Perunthagai said Congress has regained Erode East, a constituency it had contested earlier. He noted that out of 28 constituencies allotted to the party, candidates have been identified for 23, and discussions will continue for the remaining five.

He also referred to seat-sharing talks in Kanyakumari district, where Congress is set to contest three seats, and said giving up a sitting seat would be difficult. On Srivaikuntam, he said there is an issue related to the party’s candidate and that it would be resolved through talks with the Chief Minister.

He further pointed out that Erode East, which had gone to the DMK through a by-election, has now returned to Congress as part of the current allocation.
