Thoothukudi-based Nadar associations and folk artists have urged the DMK leadership to field party deputy general secretary Kanimozhi in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. They have appealed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to give her a constituency in the southern districts.
Kanimozhi is currently the MP from Thoothukudi. Reports have suggested she is considering entering state politics, with Tiruchendur being mentioned as a possible seat, though the party leadership has not announced any decision.
The report also notes that discussions around her contesting have continued amid speculation that her entry into state-level politics could create political complications for Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, the Tirunelveli–Thoothukudi Nadar Mahamai Paripalan Sangam said Kanimozhi should be given an opportunity, describing her as a leader who can offer strong support for the southern districts, women’s rights and the welfare of girl children.
Tamil Nadu Catholic Association president Vincent Vedaraj, and several folk artists including Padma Shri awardee parai performer Velu Aasan and singer-folk artist Anthony Dasan, also backed the demand, citing her role in creating platforms for rural artists and supporting welfare measures for them.
