Spelling errors found on a renovated milestone on the Palladam–Dharapuram stretch of the state highway in Tiruppur district have been corrected by the Highways Department following a newspaper report.
The milestone, installed as part of ongoing road expansion and renewal works across districts, is located on State Highway SH 174A. It reportedly carried incorrect spellings for place names, including “Coimbatore Airport” and the town “Somanur,” drawing criticism from Tamil language enthusiasts.
The issue was published with photographs in the Dinamalar daily on March 26, prompting the department to arrange immediate rectification on the milestone.
Highways officials said the painting and lettering work—such as writing place names and travel distances—is handled by a private contractor. They attributed the mistake to negligence and said the errors have now been corrected.
