New Delhi: The Union government is planning to amend provisions in the Real Estate law that currently allow imprisonment for allottees who fail to comply with orders of the Real Estate Appellate Tribunal.

Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada told Parliament that, until now, non-compliance with the tribunal’s directions could lead to a jail term.

Under the proposed change, the penalty would be converted into a monetary fine. The fine could be up to 10% of the value of the plot, apartment or building purchased by the allottee.

The amendment is proposed through the “Jan Vishwas Amendment Bill, 2026,” he said.
