New Delhi: BJP spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill, who earlier belonged to the Congress, has triggered a fresh political debate in Delhi with a social media post on parliamentary dress.
Calling Parliament a “temple of democracy”, Shergill said some members are attending in “T-shirts and cargo pants” and argued that such attire should be banned. Though he did not name anyone, the post was widely read as a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is often seen in Parliament in similar clothing.
The remarks quickly spilled into television studios, with channels debating whether T-shirts should be allowed in Parliament and state legislatures. The Congress alleged the BJP was trying to divert attention from issues such as cooking gas shortages and international matters, while the BJP responded with counter-claims.
Within the Congress, the report said some senior leaders believe Rahul Gandhi should avoid wearing a T-shirt when attending Parliament, but are hesitant to tell him directly.
The discussion also drew parallels in Tamil Nadu, where Udhayanidhi is said to attend the Assembly in a T-shirt. A case is pending in the Madras High Court alleging he is acting against a 2019 Tamil Nadu government order related to dress restrictions.
