New Delhi: The Lok Sabha is set to take up a short-duration discussion today on measures to curb Naxal activity, as the Union government’s deadline to eradicate the movement by March 31 is set to end.
The Centre has intensified anti-Naxal operations in states where the influence has been strong, including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Officials say sustained action by security forces has led to the killing of several Naxal leaders, contributing to a setback for the movement.
Alongside enforcement, surrenders have increased, with many cadres laying down arms and turning themselves in to the police. The Union and state governments have been providing rehabilitation support, including housing and financial assistance, through resettlement schemes.
According to the report, more than 10,000 Naxals have surrendered over the past 10 years. The government has decided to discuss the issue during the current Budget Session.
The discussion in the Lok Sabha will be held under Rule 193, which does not involve voting by members, but requires a response from the government.
