Nepal has announced that one member from each family of 27 students who died during last year’s youth-led protests will be provided a government job. The government has also decided to grant additional relief compensation to the affected families.

The protests, which took place in September last year, turned violent. In the unrest, 76 people were killed, including 27 students.

A general election was held in Nepal on March 5. The National Freedom Party, linked to the student organisation that played a key role in the protests, won the highest number of seats.

Balendra Shah took charge as the new Prime Minister. Within 24 hours of his assuming office, former Prime Minister Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested in connection with the deaths during the protests.

The decision to provide government employment and additional compensation to the families of the deceased students is the latest step taken by the new administration in response to the incident.
