Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran on Monday said he will contest the upcoming election from the Sattur constituency, citing the AIADMK’s preference within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Speaking to reporters in Tirunelveli, he said he has a long-standing relationship with the people of Tirunelveli, even as his candidature shifts to Sattur this time.

He said the NDA has been strengthened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). Claiming there is strong public dissatisfaction against the ruling party, he asserted that the alliance would register a major victory in the election.

Nagendran alleged that the DMK government has failed to fulfil its election promises and said drug circulation has increased, leading to a deterioration in law and order. He also pointed to hikes in electricity tariff and property tax, saying these have affected people.

He further claimed government employees were “cheated” as the old pension scheme was not provided. He also criticised the DMK government for approaching the court against the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections among forward communities, saying it has impacted poor people from several communities.

On the election process, he said election in-charge Piyush Goyal will visit Chennai, after which the candidate list will be announced. He added that nominations will be filed on April 4 and 6, and that public preference would be key in alliance decisions.
