Actor and TVK leader Vijay filed his nomination papers from Perambur, one of the two constituencies he is contesting, as the Tamil Nadu Assembly election nomination process began. Details in his affidavit have since become a talking point on social media.

In the affidavit, Vijay has declared movable and immovable assets valued at Rs 642.74 crore. The filing also mentions holdings including agricultural land and commercial buildings, and notes that he runs a real estate company.

His income-tax disclosures in the affidavit list a total income of Rs 184.53 crore for 2024–25. The figures shown for earlier years are Rs 105 crore (2023–24), Rs 198 crore (2022–23), Rs 237 crore (2021–22) and Rs 8 crore (2020–21).

The disclosures have revived scrutiny of claims made by some TVK functionaries and supporters that Vijay gave up an annual income of Rs 500 crore to enter politics. Senior party coordinator K.A. Sengottaiyan had earlier told reporters in Coimbatore that Vijay had “thrown away” a Rs 500 crore yearly income to serve people.

Online users have contrasted those statements with the affidavit’s five-year income figures, noting that the income crossed Rs 200 crore only once and was below that level in three years, with one year showing Rs 8 crore. The debate has also reignited discussion around long-running reports and social media posts claiming Vijay was paid around Rs 200 crore per film for recent projects.
