Chennai: The Union government has made it mandatory for all blood banks in the country to register and update details of blood units and blood components on the e-RaktKosh website.
The decision follows a recent regulatory meeting convened by the Union Health Ministry to monitor and streamline the functioning of blood banks and storage centres nationwide.
Citing the outcomes of the meeting, the ministry has issued a circular to all state governments, asking them to ensure transparency in blood bank operations and to take steps to obtain accurate, real-time information on available stocks.
State-level health authorities have been instructed to ensure that all approved blood banks are registered on the central e-RaktKosh portal. The circular stresses that not only blood unit stocks but also inventories of blood components must be updated promptly.
The ministry said the move would help verify that blood used for medical treatment is utilised effectively and could also support timely access during emergencies, potentially saving patients’ lives.
