AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Friday said there should be a legal inquiry into allegations that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was kept under house arrest, and that action would be taken if the claim is found to be true.

Speaking at a public meeting in Arani, EPS responded to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s criticism over his remarks. EPS said he had only referred to a statement attributed to DMK deputy general secretary Raja in an audio message that has been widely circulated.

EPS alleged that Stalin was directing his anger at him instead of questioning Raja, and claimed that even Alagiri had made similar assertions. He argued that the controversy itself raises doubts and said the matter should be examined through due legal process.

He further said that if AIADMK returns to power, it would conduct an inquiry into the audio message and proceed with legal action. Drawing a comparison, EPS recalled DMK’s 2021 election promise of a proper inquiry into the circumstances surrounding former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s death.

EPS also addressed allegations related to burial space at Marina, saying he had taken the same decision Karunanidhi’s government had taken in earlier cases involving former leaders. He said land was allotted at Guindy and claimed the decision was later challenged in court.
