CUDDALORE: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan has sparked a stir within his party after announcing a Congress functionary as the candidate in his place for the Kattumannarkoil Assembly constituency.
Thirumavalavan had earlier said he would contest the Assembly election from Kattumannarkoil, citing a plan to focus on state politics. However, he later reversed the decision and named Jothimani, son of late leader Ilayaperumal, as the nominee.
The announcement drew attention after it emerged that Jothimani continues to be with the Congress. Jothimani also said no one had approached him about contesting from the constituency and that he received the information suddenly.
In his remarks, Jothimani said he had submitted an application within the Congress seeking a ticket and welcomed the development. He added that he would consult Thirumavalavan on the next steps, including whether he would contest on the VCK symbol or the Congress symbol.
Within the VCK, the move has led to dissatisfaction, with cadres questioning why a non-party member was chosen when party members were expecting opportunities. The decision has also prompted speculation among party circles about whether any pressure or alliance-related considerations influenced the seat being ceded.
