Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has said his priority in the current Assembly election is to campaign across constituencies rather than contest as a candidate.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said he had already submitted a written letter to the party leadership stating that he did not wish to contest this election. He added that he had conveyed the same to senior leaders as well.

Annamalai said he was happy that the party leadership wanted to use him for campaigning. He said he would campaign not only in Tamil Nadu but also for NDA alliance candidates in Puducherry and Kerala.

He said he considered it his responsibility to speak strongly about what he called the DMK’s mistakes. Responding to speculation about why he is not contesting, he said his name was never recommended by the Tamil Nadu BJP selection committee to the higher leadership, and therefore the central leadership could not have allotted him a seat. He added that since he himself did not want to contest, he could not blame the party leadership for assigning him campaign duties.
