Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who was campaigning in Ramanathapuram, returned a ‘Vel’ (spear) presented to him by a party functionary after a public meeting, according to reports.

The incident took place in the Aranmanai area, where he sought votes on Friday night. After his speech, party office-bearers came forward to present gifts.

When one functionary offered the ‘Vel’, Udhayanidhi reportedly took it and handed it back to the same person. Moments later, another functionary presented a Buddha statue, which he accepted with visible happiness.

The contrasting response surprised some of those present at the venue.

Earlier in the day, as he travelled from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram, his vehicle was stopped and checked by flying squad officials near the Achundanvayal check post.
