Thoothukudi witnessed a brief commotion during election campaigning after a group of women stopped the campaign vehicle of Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan.
The minister, who is contesting from the Tiruchendur constituency for the seventh time, had filed her nomination on April 2 and has been touring various locations in the constituency to seek votes.
On Friday, while campaigning near Kalvilai village close to Meignanapuram, more than 50 women gathered around the vehicle and raised slogans, alleging that promises made over the past 25 years about implementing development schemes in their area had not been fulfilled.
As the women argued and blocked the vehicle, it reportedly moved away quickly. The women also chased the minister’s supporters who were following the campaign vehicle, pulling one person’s shirt and demanding answers.
DMK functionary Umari Shankar held talks with the women and assured them that the temple in Kalvilai would be fully built after the election. Some women responded that they would build the village temple themselves and asked the party leaders to focus on their work. The incident led to brief tension in the area.
