A Madurai district court is set to pronounce the sentence on Monday, April 6, for nine police personnel convicted in the Sathankulam custodial death case.
The case relates to the deaths of traders Jayaraj and his son Bennix from Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district. They were taken for inquiry during the COVID-19 lockdown after police alleged their shop was kept open beyond permitted hours.
According to the case records, the two were assaulted in custody and later died despite treatment. The matter was registered as a murder case, and Inspector Sridhar is among the nine found guilty.
The court is expected to announce the quantum of punishment at 3.30 pm. The Tamil Nadu government has already submitted its stand on sentencing in a sealed cover, while the Union government has filed a report urging maximum punishment for those involved.
