Fuel price spike triggers fare revision
Air India has announced a sharp increase in ticket costs after the Centre raised aviation turbine fuel prices amid continuing war tensions in West Asia. The airline said the move is aimed at offsetting the steep rise in operating expenses.
ATF costs nearly doubled in a month
According to the report, aviation fuel prices climbed significantly worldwide, with the per-barrel price rising from Rs 9,250 in late February to Rs 18,162 by the end of March. Airlines have said fuel accounts for about 40% to 45% of total operating costs, intensifying pressure on carriers.
Up to 25% hike in Air India fuel surcharge
Air India said it has increased its fuel surcharge by up to 25% and revised domestic fares based on distance from today. For domestic trips up to 500 km, the additional charge will be Rs 299, while journeys over 2,000 km will attract a maximum surcharge of Rs 899.
International routes see steep additions
For international travel, passengers will pay an added fuel surcharge of Rs 2,232 for SAARC destinations and Rs 19,605 for European routes. For long-haul destinations such as North America and Australia, the surcharge can go up to Rs 26,040.
Effective dates
Air India said the revised charges will apply from today for most routes, while the increased surcharge for Europe, North America and Australia will come into effect from the day after tomorrow.
