Chennai: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has announced it will refund the nomination application fee collected from party functionaries, after deciding not to contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
The party had earlier invited applications from members interested in contesting and fixed a fee of Rs 50,000 per applicant. More than 60 people across Tamil Nadu submitted applications and paid the amount.
After MNM opted out of the election, applicants sought the return of the fee. Party functionaries had initially indicated that the amount would be treated as party funds and could not be refunded, triggering controversy and discontent among office-bearers.
In a statement, MNM headquarters secretary Senthil Arumugam said those who filed applications can collect the refunded amount in person from the party’s head office from April 8 to April 16.
