Washington: The United States has announced a two-week pause in attacks on Iran, with Tehran agreeing to an interim ceasefire, easing immediate tensions in the region.

US President Donald Trump said the truce would hold if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz proceeds smoothly. He also accepted 10 demands put forward by Iran as part of talks, according to the report.

Iran said it would allow vessels from all countries to travel through the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that if attacks on Iran stop, the country’s armed forces would halt defensive actions.

Araghchi added that, in coordination with Iran’s armed forces and within technical limits, safe transit through the strait could be ensured for two weeks. Following the announcement, crude oil prices reportedly fell by around 18%.

Iran also thanked Pakistan for helping facilitate the interim ceasefire. Pakistan is set to host peace talks aimed at a permanent ceasefire in Islamabad on April 10.
