Mumbai: Sunetra Pawar is set to be elected unopposed from Baramati in Maharashtra after the Congress candidate withdrew the nomination in the by-election.
The bypoll was announced following the death of NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who was serving as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, in an aircraft accident. Baramati had been represented by him as an MLA.
Sunetra Pawar, also a Deputy Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar’s wife, entered the fray for the seat. Congress had initially fielded a candidate against her.
According to the report, NCP leaders Chhagan Bhujbal and Dhananjay Munde held talks with Congress leaders, and Sunetra Pawar also spoke with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. After the discussions, the Congress nominee withdrew, clearing the way for her unopposed election.
