A head constable was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly setting fire to a DMK flag outside the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in Chennai, triggering tension in the area.
The accused, identified as Kothandapani, is attached to the Otteri police station. According to sources, he has been raising complaints for years alleging that improper treatment led to severe complications for his daughter.
His daughter had been treated for leg pain at the Egmore Government Children’s Welfare Hospital and the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. The family claims the condition worsened and her foot was later amputated.
Police said Kothandapani arrived at the Secretariat around 9 am with his daughter, wearing his police uniform. When personnel on guard were momentarily inattentive, he allegedly set the party flag on fire.
On noticing the incident, police on duty rushed in and doused the flames with water. Kothandapani was immediately taken into custody; he reportedly argued with officers who tried to stop him. An inquiry is under way.
