New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the women’s reservation bill should not be delayed, calling it “the need of the hour” and warning that any postponement would be deeply unfortunate.

In a statement, Modi noted that Parliament is set to meet on April 16 to pass a key bill aimed at strengthening women’s reservation. He said the move should be seen not merely as a legal step, but as a reflection of the aspirations of crores of women in the country.

Emphasising that women make up nearly half of India’s population, the Prime Minister said their contribution to the nation is immense. He pointed to women’s leadership across fields such as science, technology, entrepreneurship, sports, music and the arts, and said significant progress has been made in recent years in areas including education and health.

However, he said women’s representation in politics remains inadequate. Modi argued that the 2029 Lok Sabha election and upcoming state Assembly elections should be conducted with women’s reservation in place.

Calling the decision a national responsibility rather than a party matter, he said delaying it would mean delaying the strength of India’s democracy. He urged MPs from all parties to support the bill without partisan differences.
