The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an inquiry report before the Madras High Court in connection with a complaint against Ramanathapuram MP Nawaskani, alleging disproportionate assets.
Nawaskani, elected to the Lok Sabha from Ramanathapuram in 2019 and 2024 as an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP, faces petitions comparing his nomination affidavits from the two elections. The petitioner, advocate Venkatachalapathy, claimed the affidavits indicate assets worth Rs 23.58 crore in excess of known income.
In the petitions, the petitioner sought directions for an Income Tax Department inquiry and also requested that the CBI be ordered to register a case based on the asset details disclosed in the affidavits.
The matters came up again for hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan. Officials from the Income Tax Department and the CBI appeared before the court.
During the hearing, the Income Tax Department filed copies of documents related to Nawaskani’s income tax accounts in a sealed cover, while the CBI submitted case-related documents. The bench directed the court registry to keep the documents सुरक्षित and produce them when the case is taken up again.
