The South Indian Dargahs and Mosques Association has announced its support for the AIADMK-BJP alliance in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election scheduled for April 23.
Representatives of the association met AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) in Chennai and conveyed their decision. The meeting also included office-bearers from eight Muslim organisations, including the Tamil Nadu Urdu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam.
During the interaction, the groups expressed dissatisfaction over the DMK government’s actions related to the appointment of the state’s Chief Qazi. They said their objection stems from the choice of a Chief Qazi from a non-Sufi Sunni background.
The organisations pointed out that Muslims constitute about 3% of Tamil Nadu’s population, and that Sufi Sunni followers form a majority within this share, at around 2.3%. With the election nearing, the support from a section described as numerically significant is being seen as an added boost for the AIADMK, according to the report.
