Chennai: Tamil Nadu Mahila Congress president Hasina Syed has resigned from her post, alleging irregularities in the party’s Assembly seat allocation and saying she was humiliated after not being given an opportunity to contest.
Syed, who also served as a national secretary in the Congress women’s wing and was appointed as the Tamil Nadu unit chief in 2024, said adequate chances were not provided to her and to women candidates. She publicly criticised the party’s Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar and raised questions about the party’s stated commitment to 33% representation for women.
In her remarks, Syed alleged that her assured seat was taken away at the last moment and claimed that names of women leaders suggested from constituencies such as Singanallur and Kulachal were not even considered. She compared the situation with other states, saying women leaders had been given more opportunities elsewhere.
Following the controversy, the Congress women’s wing said Syed had been removed from her position for “anti-party activities”, with an order issued by All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba. Syed has also sent a resignation letter to Rahul Gandhi, reiterating that deserving women, including herself, were denied tickets despite the leadership’s earlier assurances.
