Patna: Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar is expected to resign from the top post on April 14, according to reports.

In the Assembly election held late last year, the NDA comprising JD(U) and the BJP returned to power in Bihar. The BJP won more seats than JD(U), but Nitish Kumar was sworn in as chief minister.

Speculation about a BJP-led government in the state gained momentum after Nitish Kumar contested the recent Rajya Sabha election, triggering strong objections from sections of his supporters and party workers.

Nitish Kumar said he had held several positions earlier but had never served as a Rajya Sabha MP, and that this was the reason for his move towards Delhi politics. He is set to take oath as a Rajya Sabha MP today and left Patna for Delhi on Wednesday.

Reports also claim he has urged the BJP leadership to fill the chief minister’s post immediately, with indications that he prefers Deputy CM and senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary for the role. Preparations are said to be underway for a swearing-in ceremony on April 15, marking the end of Nitish Kumar’s more than two-decade-long state-level political journey.
