Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned amid a controversy over bundles of currency notes allegedly found at his official residence during a fire incident.
Varma, who earlier served as a judge of the Delhi High Court and lived in a government bungalow in Delhi, faced scrutiny after firefighters reportedly discovered burnt bundles of ₹500 notes in a room while responding to a blaze at his home last year. He was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court.
Following the episode, MPs from both ruling and opposition alliances submitted notices to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking his removal. The Speaker accepted the notices and ordered the formation of an inquiry committee.
Varma’s side moved the Supreme Court seeking to cancel the parliamentary committee’s inquiry, but the court allowed the probe to continue. With a parliamentary inquiry having been conducted and an internal inquiry also underway, Varma has now submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu.
