CBSE has issued a circular asking its affiliated schools to start teaching a third language for Class 6 from the current academic year, in line with the new education policy. The board has instructed schools that have not yet prepared a syllabus to begin classes within seven days.

The circular refers to the National Curriculum Framework (NCFSE), which promotes multilingualism and cultural understanding of Indian languages. It recommends teaching two Indian languages under the “R1, R2, R3” structure, making “R3” compulsory in Class 6.

CBSE said official textbooks for languages listed in the Constitution will be provided soon. Until then, schools have been asked to commence lessons using local books or learning materials.

The board also stated that the languages introduced in Class 6 should remain available as optional choices for students in Classes 9 and 10. Schools must inform their selected “R3” language to the respective regional offices and upload the details on the OASIS portal.

Officials at the CBSE regional office in Chennai said they have not yet received any detailed guidelines. Educationist Jayaprakash Gandhi urged the Centre not to rush the three-language policy, calling for textbooks to be developed grade-wise, teacher training to be conducted, and adequate time to appoint qualified staff before implementation.
