A mother and daughter from Chennai have entered the Tamil Nadu Assembly election as independent candidates, saying their faith in political parties has eroded.
Vijayalakshmi (43), a social activist from Jawahar Nagar in Kolathur, and her daughter Stephy (26), a lawyer, said they were dissatisfied with party politics and decided to contest on their own.
Stephy is campaigning in the Kolathur constituency, where Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is the DMK candidate. She is contesting with the boat symbol, in a field reported to have 34 candidates.
Vijayalakshmi, also known as Sengodi Vijayalakshmi, is contesting as an independent in Alandur, against DMK candidate Anbarasan and AIADMK candidate Saravanan.
Stephy said they oppose what she described as incompetent politics that collects money in the name of taxes and offers “free” promises to secure votes. She added that they would not make any promises, but would show clearly how they intend to proceed.
