Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met face-to-face at the Parliament complex in Delhi on April 11. A video showing the two speaking for a few minutes has gone viral online.
The interaction took place on the occasion of the birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. This year is significant as the 200th birth anniversary celebrations are set to begin.
Phule, born in 1827 in Maharashtra, is remembered as one of India’s leading social reformers. Reports noted that his life reflected courage, continuous pursuit of change and a strong commitment to social welfare.
As part of the observance, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Modi and Rahul Gandhi, among others, paid floral tributes at Phule’s statue located within the Parliament premises.
According to the report, Rahul Gandhi welcomed the Prime Minister, after which Modi spoke briefly with him before both proceeded with the tribute programme.
