Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to leaders of all political parties urging them to speak in one voice to ensure the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill. He said the upcoming special session of Parliament is an opportunity to further strengthen democracy.
In his letter, Modi noted that parties across the spectrum have long expressed the desire to increase women’s representation in politics. He said this is the right time to translate that intent into action and that the opportunity should not be allowed to slip.
He added that after extensive consultations, the time has come to implement women’s reservation in its true spirit. Modi said the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections must be conducted with women’s reservation included.
According to the Prime Minister, implementing the measure would rejuvenate democratic institutions and strengthen public trust, calling it a major achievement. He expressed confidence that Parliament would come together to deliver what he described as a historic outcome.
Modi also said societies progress when women get opportunities to advance, participate in decision-making and lead. He pointed to women’s growing contributions across public life—from space and sports to the armed forces and startups—and said increasing their role in politics is essential, noting that women make up nearly half the population.
