Milk is a daily necessity for the public, making the state’s dairy sector a key department. However, the report points to corruption concerns and says the sector’s growth is being affected.
During the DMK government, multiple announcements related to the dairy department were made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, but several have not moved into execution. Among them is the proposed ‘Ven Fund’ scheme to provide microcredit to milk producers through primary milk producers’ cooperative societies.
Other dairy-related announcements listed include converting primary cooperative societies into multi-service centres, refurbishing 30 bulk milk coolers across 14 district unions at a cost of Rs 2.40 crore, selling nutritional tonic for cattle at fair prices through cooperatives, and collecting data on producers, milch animals, milk output and green fodder cultivation through a mobile application.
The report also lists municipal administration projects announced in the Assembly but not implemented. These include “healthy walkways” at multiple locations in Chennai, a science-technology-environment-mathematics park worth Rs 5 crore, 15 rainwater collection-and-pumping installations in low-lying areas at Rs 18 crore, upgrading Anna Nagar’s Dr Visvesvaraya Park to international standards through public-private participation, a new flyover at the Valluvar Kottam junction at Rs 98 crore, and building high-end commercial complexes via PPP in key locations to boost revenue.
