An auto driver in Dindigul has launched a small but visible voter-awareness effort during the election season by displaying messages against vote-selling on his vehicle.

Murugan (47), from EB Colony in Dindigul, has been driving an auto for about 30 years. On the rear of his auto, he has tied a printed flex banner carrying slogans such as “No freebies except education and healthcare; we need jobs,” and “Don’t sell votes so good governance can flourish.”

Speaking about his initiative, Murugan said voters are often confused about what should be provided free of cost. He cited Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s announcement of free education from primary to higher education as an example.

He also criticised what he described as a growing tendency to fight for benefits and said repeated freebie announcements by political parties have weakened self-reliance across generations. He said he uses the banner to spread awareness among customers and people he knows.
