Tension was reported in Thoothukudi district after a group of Muslim women stopped the campaign vehicle of Fisheries Minister Anita Radhakrishnan in Tiruchendur constituency.
Radhakrishnan, who has won the seat six times, is contesting for a seventh term on the DMK ticket and has been on an intensive campaign trail since April 6.
According to reports, opposition has surfaced at multiple stops during the campaign. Residents in areas including Kalvilai, Kottur and Arumuganeri allegedly blocked the vehicle, claiming that no development schemes had been implemented in their localities.
The latest incident occurred in Kayalpattinam municipality when the minister’s vehicle entered a Muslim-majority area. Some women prevented the vehicle from entering their street, accusing the administration of failing to provide basic facilities during past rain and flood damage and of not carrying out adequate preparedness work.
Despite the minister attempting to hold talks, the women reportedly raised slogans such as “You will not get our vote” and insisted the vehicle leave. After waiting for a long time, the minister turned back, as protests continued in the area.
