The first batch of indigenously manufactured BrahMos missiles was formally handed over to the Indian Army on Sunday in Lucknow, marking a boost for the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ push.
The missiles have been produced at a defence manufacturing facility set up in Uttar Pradesh to reduce dependence on foreign sources for military supplies. The unit is part of the India–Russia joint effort behind the BrahMos programme.
Officials said domestic production is expected to cut imports and support the economy, while also strengthening the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The facility is also generating employment, with more than 100 people reportedly benefiting.
BrahMos can be launched from land, sea and air platforms and is capable of travelling at around three times the speed of sound. It can engage multiple targets, and the domestically produced missiles are also expected to support exports, with countries such as the Philippines having signed purchase agreements.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh participated in the event and formally handed over the missiles to the Army.
