AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) on Tuesday alleged that Chief Minister M K Stalin was “afraid of defeat” and could not accept the move to provide 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.
Speaking to reporters in Dindigul, EPS referred to the special session of Parliament scheduled for April 16, which is expected to take up a constitutional amendment to implement the women’s reservation.
EPS’ remarks came after Stalin released a video statement warning that Tamil Nadu would not remain silent if any delimitation exercise harmed the State or increased the political strength of northern States.
According to EPS, women have been demanding the reservation for years and the Centre has now moved to fulfil that long-standing demand. He claimed Stalin’s comments reflected an inability to accept the development and were driven by fear of electoral defeat.
