Nitish Kumar has resigned as Chief Minister of Bihar, submitting his resignation letter to Governor Syed Arif Hasanain in Patna. The move comes after Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha and took oath as an MP on the 10th.

Following his resignation, the BJP held a meeting of its MLAs and elected Samrat Choudhary as the leader of the legislature party. With this, Choudhary has been selected to head the new government and is expected to be sworn in tomorrow.

The JD(U)-BJP alliance had returned to power after the Assembly election held late last year, with the BJP winning more seats. Despite that, Nitish Kumar had continued as Chief Minister.

In a statement, Kumar said he had decided to step down and handed over his resignation after a cabinet meeting. He added that he would extend cooperation and advice to the new government, and indicated he would now focus on national politics.

Samrat Choudhary had been serving as Deputy Chief Minister in Nitish Kumar’s cabinet.
