Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday warned that the state would not remain silent if any proposed constituency delimitation ends up harming Tamil Nadu.
He said a joint action committee meeting was held in Chennai by inviting chief ministers and key party leaders from across India who could be affected by the exercise. Referring to past population-control messaging, Stalin said states were asked to limit population growth and follow family planning, and questioned whether those who complied were now being “punished”.
Stalin alleged that the BJP was seeking to push delimitation in haste and described it as anti-democratic. He also accused the Centre of undermining states’ rights.
Pointing to the lack of clarity on how delimitation would be carried out, he said the absence of an explanation and the perception of secrecy were fuelling concerns. He issued what he called a final warning, saying Tamil Nadu would respond strongly and that electoral power was secondary to the issue at hand.
